Look Ma - No Hands!

Catch a (new) wave and you’re sitting on top of the world

Curt’s writing about goals, why we work, in Money or Meaning, and says “I call the first ten years out of college the incubation period.”

That sounds about right to me. There’s a line in Step Into Liquid, and on the soundtrack CD, that resonates every time I hear it. Gerry Lopez is talking about surfing, but it applies to many aspects of life – especially this thing we call a career.

“The first 20 years is just to figure out if you’re really interested or not, you know, and then the journey doesn’t really begin until the second 20.”

I’m creeping up on that twenty-year mark myself, and these days it feels like this wave has run its course. Perhaps it’s time to paddle back out and find a new set.
